MAAC Announces 2014 Field Hockey Awards

EDISON, N.J. – The Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference has announced the 2014 MAAC Field Hockey individual award winners and All-MAAC teams, which were selected by a vote of the league’s six head coaches.

Headlining the major award winners and All-MAAC First Team is Monmouth University’s Trish O’Dwyer, who was selected as the MAAC Player of the Year, as well as MAAC Offensive Player of the Year, while Monmouth’s Casey Hanna received MAAC Defensive Player of the Year honors.

Additionally, Monmouth’s Meg Donahue was named the MAAC Rookie of the Year and Quinnipiac University’s Megan Conaboy and Rider University’s Joelle Prettyman earned Co-Goalkeeper of the Year. The Hawks head coach Carli Figlio was chosen as the Lids Team Sports MAAC Coach of the Year.

O’Dwyer, a senior from Dublin, Ireland is ranked at or near the top of every offensive statistical category for the MAAC. A 2013 All-MAAC First Team selection, O’Dwyer has helped lead the Monmouth Hawks to their first regular season title since 2000. She finished the regular season with 16 goals and 11 assists for a total of 43 points, which ranks her first in the league in goals, goals per game, assists, assists per game, points and points per game with a 2.39 mark. O’Dwyer is the only player in MAAC field hockey history to average over two points per game and currently ranks second all-time in single season goals and single season assists for the MAAC, while currently ranking first in MAAC career goals with 28. This season O’Dwyer has taken 94 shots to lead the conference, and ranks in the top ten nationally in four statistical categories including goals, assists, points and points per game. The Hawks forward has also added three game winning goals to her accomplishments. O’Dwyer was named the 2014 MAAC Preseason Player of Year, as well as the MAAC Offensive Player of the Week for the weeks of Oct. 7 and Nov. 4.

Hanna, a sophomore from Seaville, New Jersey, is tied for second in the MAAC in defensive saves with five which ranks her ninth nationally. She has started all 18 games for the Hawks and added one goal for two points and ten shots from the defender position. Hanna has helped lead a Monmouth defense that has recorded three shutouts and has held opponents to just 33 goals scored all season. The Hawks defense ranks seventh in the nation with 11 defensive saves.

Donahue, a freshman from Wyomissing, Pennsylvania, leads all MAAC first year players in goals with 10 which ranks third in the league. She finished her rookie campaign with 22 points, also ranking third in the conference. The Monmouth first year player averaged 1.29 points per game and added 0.59 goals per game ranking her fourth in the league in each category respectively. Donahue was named MAAC Rookie of the Week three times this season and MAAC Offensive Player of the Week once.

Conaboy, a senior from Clarks Summit, Pennsylvania finished the regular season with three shutouts and is ranked first in the league with 124 saves, which is good for sixth nationally. She finished the regular season with a top ranked 6.89 saves per game, a 2.17 goals against average and a .752 save percentage. Conaboy was named MAAC Defensive Player of the Week on Sep. 2 and Sep. 9.

Prettyman, a junior from Newark, Delaware is first in the league in goals against average with a mark of 1.74. The Broncs’ goalkeeper owns a .691 save percentage to go along with 65 saves on the year. Prettyman averages 3.82 saves per game and has recorded two shutouts this season. Prettyman was named MAAC Defensive Player of the Week on Oct. 14.

Figlio, currently in her 8th season as the head coach of the Hawks and 10th overall at Monmouth, led her team to a 4-1 conference record and an overall mark of 11-7. Monmouth won the regular season champions’ title for the first time since joining the MAAC, and earned a number one seed in the championship. Monmouth currently ranks 18th in the nation in scoring with 50 goals on the season and ranks third nationally for penalty corners per game with a mark of 8.67. The Hawks have now qualified for their 10th conference playoff appearance, and first in the MAAC under Figlio’s leadership.

First Team All-MAAC selections include Bryant’s Rosie Bird, Monmouth’s Trish O’Dwyer and Amanda Schoenfeld and Quinnipiac’s Danielle Allan at forward. Monmouth’s Cori Allen, Rider’s Carlotta Clotet Alsina and Sacred Heart’s Liz Bergman make up the midfielders. The defense features Bryant’s Kelsey Hiltebeitel, Monmouth’s Casey Hanna, Quinnipiac’s Megan Osanitsch, Rider’s Dezarae Fillmyer and Sacred Heart’s Sarah Bergman. Rider’s Joelle Prettyman and Sacred Heart’s Mary Altepeter are the goalkeepers.
