Canisius Sweeps Weekly Awards

EDISON, N.J. – The Canisius College Golden Griffin’s take home all Swimming and Diving Weekly Awards. Canisius College freshman Gregory Staebell is the MAAC Men’s Swimmer of the Week. Another Golden Griff, Rebecca Anthone is the MAAC Women’s Swimmer of the Week. Canisius senior Eddie Quarantillo is the MAAC Men’s Diver of the Week, Taylor Epstein of Canisius College received the award on the women’s side.
Canisius College freshman Gregory Staebell is the MAAC Men’s Swimmer of the Week. Freshman Gregory Staebell had his best meet yet for the Golden Griffins men’s team as the Williamsville, N.Y. native helped lead the Blue and Gold to a 204-86 victory over the SUNY Fredonia Blue Devils. Staebell was part of the 200-yard medley relay team that won with a time of 1:39.50. To go along with the relay team victory, Staebell also won the 100-yard backstroke with a time of 55.21 and the 200-yard backstroke with a time of 1:57.81.
Freshman Rebecca Anthone once again had a big week for the Griffs women’s swim team. The freshman freestyler from Clarence, N.Y. led the Blue and Gold women’s team to a victory over the Fredonia State Blue Devils on Saturday afternoon. Anthone not only won the women’s 50-yard freestyle with a time of 25.68 but also was part of the first place finishing 200-yard freestyle relay team. Anthone also broke the Fredonia State pool record in the 1000-yard freestyle with a time of 10:46.83. The freshman has been having a really strong rookie season for the Griffs and has constantly improved from week to week.
Senior Diver Eddie Quarantillo had yet another terrific week on the diving board for the Canisius men’s diving team. The senior from Lewiston, N.Y., won both the men’s 1 & 3-meter diving contests, leading the Blue and Gold to a 204-86 victory over SUNY Fredonia. Quarantillo won the 1-meter contest with a score of 285.40 and the 3-meter with a score of 305.10. The 204-86 victory was the largest all season for the Griffs’ men’s team.
Taylor Epstein, the senior from Cleveland, Ohio performed well in the Griffs’ dual meet against the Fredonia State Blue Devils on Saturday afternoon. The senior finished with a score of 183.30 in the women’s 3-meter contest, just 72 points off of first place. Epstein also scored a 219.10 in the 1-meter contest, less than 17 points away from a first place finish. The Cleveland native has been having a terrific season on the diving board for the Griffs, having already broken Canisius pool records.
