Hearst and Weir Selected as Weekly Award Winners in Men's Basketball

Player of the Week

Zaid Hearst, Quinnipiac 

Sr., G, 6-4, 215, Bethesda, Md./Salisbury School (Conn.)

Zaid Hearst factored heavily in both Quinnipiac wins last week, averaging 18.5 points, 5.0 rebounds and 5.0 assists per game. On Thursday night, Hearst flirted with a triple-double when the senior guard finished with 13 points, eight assists and seven rebounds in an 80-65 win over Lehigh. Hearst went 6-for-11 from the field with his eight assists serving as a career high. On Sunday afternoon, Hearst helped Quinnipiac upset Pac-12 foe Oregon State with 24 points, three rebounds and two assists in the game. Hearst had 20 points in the first half (a season best) while going 5-for-10 from the floor and 3-for-8 from long range. On the defensive side of the ball, Hearst locked down Gary Payton II (the team’s leading scorer and the son of nine-time NBA All-Star Gary Payton) holding him scoreless on 0-for-3 shooting. Hearst was also perfect from the free-throw line, making all 11 of his attempts. He shot 52.4 percent (11-21) from the floor for the week and 100 percent from the free-throw line (11-11).

Rookie of the Week

Adam Weir, Canisius 

RFr., G, 6-4, 190, Tonawanda, N.Y. /Canisius High School

Canisius redshirt-freshman Adam Weir averaged 7.5 points per game last week as the Golden Griffins scored a pair of home wins over Stony Brook and Holy Cross. For the week, the Tonawanda, N.Y., native shot 55.6 percent from the field and 71.4 percent from 3-point land, connecting on five of his seven tries from behind the arc. In the win over Holy Cross, Weir matched a career-high with nine points, highlighted by three makes from 3-point range. He also averaged 2.0 assists and recorded a blocked shot and a steal in the team’s 19-point win over Holy Cross Dec. 21.
