Second Day Concludes at MAAC Swimming & Diving Championships

Buffalo, N.Y. – The MAAC teams finished the second day of the 2014 men’s and women’s swimming and diving championships in Buffalo, N.Y. As the athletes headed back into the pool to push towards the conference title, the scores remained tight throughout the day.
The Rider men made a huge push today and currently lead with a score of 533, while second-place Marist now sits at 493 points. Canisius College is still in third with 393 points, followed by Saint Peter's (268), Niagara University (244), Bryant University (242), Iona College (205), Manhattan College (175) and Fairfield University (157).
On the women's side, Marist has tallied 514 points, while Rider stands in second place (385). Saint Peter’s is in third with 374.5 points, followed by Canisius (367.5), Iona (288), and Siena (284). Fairfield comes in at seventh tied with Niagara (152), and Manhattan sits in ninth (84).
Saint Peter’s was strong again tonight. The team of Matea Samardzic, Alexandra Sison, Cristina Decisneros and Rachel Wuko has been dominant in the MAAC championship breaking a record for the second consecutive night, this time the 400 medley relay finishing in 1:43.42. The previous record of 1:45.04 had been held by Loyola since 2009. Saint Peter’s has broken four MAAC championship records so far in this year’s championship.
Marist’s Emily Miles claimed first place in the 100 fly for the second consecutive year, while Saint Peter’s Alexandra Sison dethroned reigning 2013 100 breast winner Kerri-Anne Dodenhoff of Iona , who placed second. Adam Phillips of Rider University edged out Bryant University’s Graham Beck by just a hair in the 100 breast with his time of 56.39, beating Beck, 56.40, by one one-hundredth of a second. In the 100 back Saint Peter’s freshman Matea Samardzic beat out 2013 100 back champion Bethany Powhida, who finished second in the event for Marist College.
