Player of the Week
Elena Bowman – Manhattan
So., C/3B, 5-8, San Mateo, Calif./Aragon
Elena Bowman is the Player of the Week. Bowman hit .455 in the Jaspers’ first four contests at the Rebel Spring Games. She was 2-for-3 with a double in the season-opening loss to Saint Francis (PA) on March 7, then reached base in all three of her plate appearances against Temple later that day, with a walk, hit by pitch, and two-run homer against the Owls. Bowman then belted an extra-base hit in each of Manhattan’s games on Saturday. She had an RBI double against Akron, and went 1-for-4 with a triple, two runs scored and two RBIs in an extra-inning loss to Utah Valley.
Pitcher of the Week
Katie Alfiere - Quinnipiac
Sr., RHP, 5-9, Beacon Falls, Conn./Woodland Regional
Katie Alfiere is the Pitcher of the Week. Alfiere appeared in four of the Bobcats’ five games last past weekend and finished with 8.2 innings pitched, seven hits allowed, two earned runs, one walk and three strikeouts. Alfiere finished with a 1.82 ERA and also picked up a clutch two-out save on Sunday in Quinnipiac’s first win of the season, against St. John’s (NY), 5-3. She started her week with a scoreless inning of relief against Indiana State. She then allowed just two runs over six innings in a no-decision against Maine, striking out one with no walks. Later that day she threw a scoreless inning against Seton Hall and wrapped up the weekend with a two-out save against St. John’s. Alfiere entered the game in the bottom of the seventh with one out and the bases loaded and her team up two runs. Alfiere induced a foul out and fielder’s choice at home that ended the game and gave the Bobcats their first win of the 2014 season.
Rookie of the Week
Justene Reyes - Monmouth
Fr., IB/OF, R/R, 5-8, Carson, Calif./Warren
Justene Reyes is the Rookie of the Week. Reyes hit safely in all five games the Hawks played at the Mason Invitational, helping the Hawks to a 3-2 record. She also reached base safely at least twice in four of five games. Reyes hit .457 (7-for-15) with a run scored and an RBI for the week, including a .579 on-base percentage on the strength of three walks and a hit-by-pitch. She started the weekend with a 1-for-3 effort against George Mason with a single and a hit-by-pitch, before going 1-for-1 with two walks against the Patriots on Saturday. She finished the day with a 2-for-4 effort with an RBI against Cornell. On Sunday, she went 1-for-4 with a run scored against Cornell, before finishing the day with a 2-for-3 day with a walk against George Mason.
