MAAC Announces 2013-2014 All-MAAC Women's Basketball Award Winners

SPRINGFIELD, Mass.  – Iona College junior guard Damika Martinez is the unanimous selection as the 2013-2014 Pepsi MAAC Player of the Year by the MAAC's head coaches.

Martinez, a 5-foot-7, junior guard from Meriden, Conn., claims her second consecutive MAAC Player of the Year award and makes her second appearance on the All-MAAC First Team this year. She finishes the regular season leading the conference and ranking sixth nationally in scoring averaging 24.5 points per game. She leads the MAAC and ranks third in the nation in 3 point field goals made per game registering 3.4 shots from behind the arc each contest. Martinez has been named MAAC Player of the Week a league best five times this season and was named ECAC Player of the Week twice. Additionally, she also leads the MAAC in free-throw percentage shooting making 107 out of 122 free throws (87.7). Martinez became Iona’s all-time leader in three point field goals made this season and tied a MAAC single game record when she recorder 46 points against Rider on Feb. 16.

Niagara University’s Victoria Rampado has been named 2013-2014 MAAC Rookie of the Year. The 6-foot-2, freshman forward from Niagara Falls, Ontario, led all active freshmen in scoring during the regular season with 8.9 points and led all freshmen and her team in rebounds with 5.5 per game. She earned MAAC Rookie of the Week honors four times this season.

Aaliyah Robinson of Iona College is the 2013-2014 MAAC Sixth Player of the Year. The 5-foot-9 sophomore guard from Brandford, Conn., shot a 40.6 three point field goal percentage this season, good for seventh in the MAAC. Robinson is averaging 8.6 points, 3.1 rebounds, and 1.1 assists while playing in 21 minutes of action per game off the bench this season.    

Senior guard Leanne Ockenden of Marist College was voted as the MAAC Defensive Player of the Year for the second year in a row. Ockenden, a 5-foot-10, Syracuse, N.Y. native, is averaging 1.7 steals per game for the Red Foxes which ranks fourth in the league. She also averages 3.8 defensive rebounds which ranks 14th in the conference. On the offensive side, Ockenden contributes 11.8 points and 2.4 assists per game this season.
