Siena Advances to Sixth Consecutive MAAC Championship Game

Poughkeepsie, N.Y. – The top seeded Siena College Saints defeated the fourth seeded Canisius College Golden Griffins, 14-11 in the first semifinal game of the 2014 Men's Lacrosse Championship at Tenney Stadium at Leonidoff Field on the campus of Marist College.

The Saints trailed early as the Griffs scored two quick goals. The Saints would score its first goal of the game to bring Siena within one after with a pass from Conor Prunty to Nate Barry, who was able to put the ball in the back of the net. Canisius would go on to increase its lead with an assist from Tim Edwards to Austin Romantic with 3:40 left in the first quarter and the Griffs would hold on to a 3-1 lead until the end of the first.

Siena came out strong in the second quarter outscoring Canisius 5-1. It took the Saints less than two minutes in the second quarter to rally with goals from Prunty and Richie Hurley to tie the game at 3-3.  After tying the game at 13:14 in the second quarter, Colin Clive scored the go ahead goal with an assist from Hurley three minutes later. The Saints would not trail in the game from that point forward.

Prunty added four goals and one assist and the MAAC Offensive Player of the Year, Hurley contributed three goals and a game-high three assists. Five other players scored goals for the Saints, including Nate Barry who had a hat trick in the victory. All-MAAC Second Team member, Tommy Cordts recorded 12 saves in the win.

The Golden Griffins were able to come within one of Siena with 4:46 in the 3rd quarter after a goal from Billy Jacobbi, but were unable to stop Siena’s offense. Jacobbi and Nick Tuttle both tallied hat tricks for Canisius, while Jeff Edwards, Tim Edwards and Austin Romantic each added three points for the Griffs.

Siena will play the winner of the semifinal of the second seeded Marist Red Foxes and the third seeded Detroit Titans.

The championship game will be at 11a.m. at Marist College's Tenney Stadium at Leonidoff Field and can be seen live on ESPN3 and Time Warner Cable.
