Marist Defeats Monmouth 13-7 in the first Semifinals of the Women's Lacrosse Championship

BUFFALO, N.Y. – Top-seeded Marist College defeated fourth-seeded Monmouth University, 13-7, in the first semifinal of the 2014 MAAC Women’s Lacrosse Championship played at Demske Sports Complex on the campus of Canisius College.
Sophomore attack Allison Gionta led the way for the Red Foxes scoring nine points on three goals and six assists. Senior captain Jamie Romano scored four goals for Marist on five shots, while junior attack Kristen Viscount recorded three goals and an assists. Junior Erin Schoeder added two goals while Natalie Bonaroti scored one for the Red Foxes.
Monmouth’s junior attack Stephanie Anderson scored a hat trick for the Hawks with three goals, while junior midfielder Allison Stathius and freshman attack Olivia Higson recorded two goals apiece to account for Monmouth’s seven points.
Marist goalkeeper and 2014 Rookie of the Year, Abigail Witczak made 6 saves in goal, while Monmouth keeper Katie Donohoe made 3 stops.
The Red Foxes return to the MAAC title game for the second year in a row and will face the winner of tonight’s second semifinal between second-seeded Fairfield University and third-seeded Canisius College in the title game on Sunday, May 4 at 1:00 p.m., live on Time Warner Cable and ESPN3.
The winner of the 2014 MAAC Women’s Lacrosse Championship earns the league’s automatic bid to the 2014 NCAA Division I Women’s Lacrosse Championship. The NCAA selection show will take place on Sunday, May 4 on NCAA.com.
