EDISON, N.J. – The Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference honored Quinnipiac Head Baseball Coach Dan Gooley Wednesday night for his service to the sport of college baseball. Prior to the Bobcats MAAC Championship game at FirstEnergy Park in Lakewood, N.J. MAAC Commissioner Richard Ensor presented Gooley with a plaque recognizing his thirty-plus years of service to college baseball.
“Coach Gooley has amassed a great coaching career over the past 30 years,” stated Ensor. “The MAAC is proud to recognize the years of coaching and overall service that Coach Gooley has provided to the sport of college baseball.”
Gooley, a Quinnipiac graduate, is retiring at the end of his 2014 campaign as the school’s all time leader in coaching victories. Gooley is currently in his second stint as Head Baseball Coach of the Bobcats. He spent six seasons as an assistant coach before being named the program’s head coach in 1977. His first tenure as Head Coach spanned from 1977-1987 and in that time Gooley led the program to a 203-122-5 record, five 20-win seasons, three NCAA Division II regional appearances, and the school’s only College World Series appearance in 1983.
In 1988 Gooley moved on to become the Head Coach at the University of Hartford for five seasons before coming back to his alma mater to again be the Head Coach at Quinnipiac in 2001. His second stint saw the Bobcats reach their first ever Division I NCAA Regional appearance in 2005 and in 2007 earned a Northeast Conference Regular Season Championship title.
He was named the New England Intercollegiate Baseball Coaches Association’s Coach of the Year in 1988 and added accolades in 2004, being named the Northeast Conference Coach of the Year and the Connecticut Baseball Coach of the Year.
Gooley also has a storied playing career at Quinnipiac. He is the school’s career leader in strikeouts (316), ranks second in victories (20) and earned run average (2.47), and is a member of the Quinnipiac Alumni Athletic Hall of Fame.
Quinnipiac is schedule to play the winner of a contest between Manhattan and Monmouth on Thursday, May 22nd at 7:00pm at FirstEnergy Park in an elimination game.
