Sarle, Turner & Whitcomb Take First Men's Soccer Wilson Weekly Honors
MAAC Sports
Wilson Offensive Player of the Week
Dom Sarle, Monmouth
Sr., F, 5-9, Huntington, N.Y./St. Johns/UCSB/Bradenton Preparatory
Dom Sarle came to Monmouth with a reputation as a lethal goal scorer and took little time to prove it. After sitting out last season in a transfer year, the senior forward scored just over four minutes into his first game as a Hawk and again just over 10 minutes in to give Monmouth a 2-0 lead. Sarle scored twice on three shots, all on goal. On the lone shot that didn’t go in, he collected the rebound and found the back of the net. Sarle also assisted on a Dave Nigro goal in the 28th minute.
Wilson Defensive Player of the Week
Matt Turner, Fairfield
Jr., GK, 6-3, Park Ridge, N.J./St. Joseph’s
Junior goalkeeper Matt Turner posted a shutout in his first career start for Fairfield, helping the stags post a 1-0 win over Army. The junior made seven saves to post his first career shutout, facing 14 shots in his 90 minutes of work.
Wilson Rookie of the Week
Ben Whitcomb, Fairfield
So., D, 6-0, Liverpool, England/Trinity Pawling
Ben Whitcomb scored Fairfield’s only goal in a 1-0 win over Army in the team’s season opener. It marked the defender’s first career goal and first career game-winning goal. Whitcomb also defended well in his Fairfield debut, helping the Stags post a shutout.
