Iona's David Laury Announced as a Candidate for First-Ever Karl Malone Award

SPRINGFIELD, MASS. – Iona College men’s basketball player, senior David Laury has been named as one of sixteen candidates for the first-ever Karl Malone Award, announced by the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame today.

The Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame announced today the sixteen watch list members for the 2015 Karl Malone Power Forward of the Year Award.  Named after Hall of Famer and two-time NBA Most Valuable Player Karl Malone, the annual honor in its inaugural year recognizes the top power forwards in Division I men’s college basketball.  A national committee comprised of top college basketball personnel determined the watch list of 16 candidates.

Laury leads the MAAC with 20.5 points per game, good for eighth in the country. He has scored a total of 533 points this season which ranks fifth nationally. On the season, the East Orange, New Jersey native is averaging 9.4 rebounds, 2.7 assists, and 1.3 blocks per contest. Laury has also recorded 13 double-doubles this season, ranking second in the conference only behind the nation’s leader, Quinnipiac’s Ousmane Drame.

By early March, the current list of 16 finalists for the 2015 Karl Malone Award will be narrowed down to five players.  The final five players in contention for the award will be presented to Mr. Malone and the Hall of Fame’s selection committee.  The winner of the 2015 Karl Malone Award will be presented at ESPN’s new College Basketball Awards presented by Wendy’s from Club Nokia in Los Angeles, CA on Friday, April 10, 2015. The Awards will be televised live on ESPN2 at 8:00pm EST.
