EDISON, N.J. – At the 18:11 mark of tonight’s game between the Iona Gaels and the Marist Red Foxes, Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference history was made. Iona Gaels senior guard Damika Martinez passed Loyola University of Maryland’s Patty Stoffey on the All-Time Career Points list in MAAC women’s basketball to take sole possession of first place. Just under two minutes into the game, Martinez took a fade away jumper from beyond the arc to give her 2,468 for her career and pass Stoffey’s mark of 2,467 set 20 years ago during the 1994-95 season. Martinez finished the game with 13 points to give her a current total of 2,478.
Following the contest, MAAC Senior Associate Commissioner, Barbara Church, presented Martinez with the game ball in recognition of her career achievement.
Martinez entered the game averaging 24.0 points per game, third best in the nation after she averaged 24.9 points per game for the Gaels last season, which ranked eighth overall in the country. Martinez's efforts earned her the MAAC Player of the Year award for the second-consecutive season, along with AP All-American Honorable Mention and All-Met Player of the Year recognitions. She was also named to the All-MAAC and All-Met First Teams and All-ECAC Second Team.
Prior to the 2015 season, Martinez was named a Preseason All-American by Sporting News and was named the MAAC Preseason Player of the Year for the third consecutive year, while recently being named a candidate for the 2015 Nancy Lieberman Award, which is given by the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame to the nation’s top point guard in NCAA Division I women’s basketball.
