MAAC Women's Basketball Seed Possibilities & Tie Breakers

EDISON, N.J. – With Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference women’s basketball regular season play wrapping up on Sunday, March 1, the results of today’s three contests and tomorrow’s two games can impact final seedings in a multitude of ways. Below are details on each team’s tiebreaker scenarios pending the results from both days.

The Quinnipiac Bobcats (No. 1 seed), Marist Red Foxes (No. 2 seed), Fairfield Stags (No. 3 seed), Iona Gaels (No. 4 seed), Saint Peter’s Peacocks (No. 10 seed), and Manhattan Jaspers (No. 11 seed) are locked into their respective slots at the upcoming championship. Siena and Niagara remain in the running for the final first-round bye seed.

MAAC Women’s Basketball Seed Possibilities and Tie Breakers through games played Feb. 27

Quinnipiac (19-0) at Monmouth

Clinched #1 seed. Will play Friday, March 6th at 12:00pm against the winner of #8/#9

Marist (14-5) at Rider

Clinched #2 seed. Will play Friday, March 6th at 7:00pm against the winner of #7/#10

Fairfield (12-7) at Manhattan

Clinched #3 seed. Will play Friday, March 6th at 9:30pm vs. the winner of #6/#11

Iona (11-8) vs. Niagara

Clinched #4 seed. Will play Friday, March 6th at 2:30pm vs. #5 seed

Siena (10-9) vs. Saint Peter’s

Clinch #5 with WIN or Niagara LOSS

Clinch #6 with LOSS and Niagara WIN

Niagara (9-10) at Iona

Clinch #5 with WIN and Siena LOSS

If Iona and Fairfield tied for 3rd (12-8)

Fairfield swept Iona giving them the tiebreaker.

Fairfield #3/Iona #4

 If Iona and Siena tie for 4th (11-9)

Iona swept Siena giving them the tiebreaker.

Iona #4/Siena #5

 

Siena

If Siena and Niagara tie for 5th (10-10)

Teams split head to head. Both teams were swept by Quinnipiac. Siena was swept by Marist and Niagara split with Marist giving them the tiebreaker.

Niagara #5/Siena #6

If Niagara, Rider and Monmouth tie for 6th (9-11)

All three teams would be tied at (2-2) in the mini conference. Monmouth would have had to beat Quinnipiac giving them the tiebreaker. Niagara and Rider tied head to head. Niagara and Rider were both swept by Quinnipiac. Niagara and Rider would have both split with Marist. Niagara split with Fairfield while Rider was swept by Fairfield giving Niagara the tiebreaker.

Monmouth #6/Niagara #7/Rider #8

 If Niagara and Rider tie for 6th (9-11)

Teams split head to head. Both teams were swept by Quinnipiac. Both teams would’ve split with Marist. The next step is to compare results against third place.  There is possible tie for third between Fairfield and Iona.  Comparing results: Niagara swept Fairfield while Rider was 0-2 vs. Fairfield.  Niagara would’ve been swept by Iona and Fairfield split with Iona.    Regardless of whether or not there is tie for third Fairfield and Iona, Niagara wins the comparison by virtue of better record against the team(s) in third place.

If there is a tie for third place: Niagara swept Fairfield where Rider was swept by Fairfield therefore win the tiebreaker.

Niagara #6/Rider #7

If Niagara and Monmouth tie for 6th (9-11)

Teams split head to head. Monmouth would have split with Quinnipiac while Niagara was swept by Quinnipiac giving Monmouth the tiebreaker.

If Monmouth, Rider and Niagara tie for 6th (9-11)

Teams split head to head. Monmouth would have to beat Quinnipiac in their final game and which would give them the tiebreaker.

If Monmouth, Rider and Canisius tie for 7th (8-12)

All three teams would be in a mini conference. Rider is (3-1) in the mini conference where Canisius is (2-2) and Monmouth is (1-3). Therefore, Rider would win the tiebreaker followed by Canisius and then Monmouth.

If Monmouth and Canisius tie for 8th (8-12)

Canisius swept Monmouth so therefore they would win the tiebreaker.

If Rider, Monmouth and Niagara tie for 6th (9-11)

All three teams would be tied at (2-2) in the mini conference. Monmouth would have had to beat Quinnipiac giving them the tiebreaker. Niagara and Rider tied head to head. Niagara and Rider were both swept by Quinnipiac. Niagara and Rider would have both split with Marist. Niagara split with Fairfield while Rider was swept by Fairfield giving Niagara the tiebreaker.

Teams split head to head. Monmouth would have to beat Quinnipiac in their final game and which would give them the tiebreaker.

If Rider ties with Niagara for 6th (9-11)

Teams split head to head. Both teams were swept by Quinnipiac. Both teams would’ve split with Marist. The next step is to compare results against third place.  There is possible tie for third between Fairfield and Iona.  Comparing results: Niagara swept Fairfield while Rider was 0-2 vs. Fairfield.  Niagara would’ve been swept by Iona and Fairfield split with Iona.    Regardless of whether or not there is tie for third Fairfield and Iona, Niagara wins the comparison by virtue of better record against the team(s) in third place.

If Canisius is alone at 8-12, they would secure the #9 seed

If Canisius, Rider and Monmouth all tie for 7th (8-12)

All three teams would be in a mini conference. Rider is (3-1) in the mini conference where Canisius is (2-2) and Monmouth is (1-3). Therefore, Rider would win the tiebreaker followed by Canisius and then Monmouth.

If Canisius and Rider tie for 8th (8-12)

Rider swept Canisius so therefore the win the tiebreaker.
