Saints Take Down Gaels in MAAC Championship Quarterfinals

ALBANY, N.Y.  – Siena’s Rookie of the Year Margot Hetzke led the Saints scoring 20 points and adding eight rebounds while shooting .500 from the field.  In the second round matchup, the No. 5 Saints defeated to the No. 4 Gaels 71-61 on Friday afternoon in the 2015 MAAC Women's Basketball Championship.

Tehresa Coles contributed 17 points and went eight for ten from the charity stripe. Ida Krough recorded 14 points, eight rebounds and three assists.

Siena started the game off hot, taking an early 12 point lead putting the Saints up 14-2 after a three point shot by Ida Krough. Iona came back with a run of their own, cutting the lead to just four points for a 16-12 score on a Joy Adams layup. The Gaels took their first lead of the game on a layup from Karynda Dupree at the 3:07 mark to bring the score to 25-24. Iona would increase the lead to four points at the half to take a 29-25 advantage. The Gaels would come out of the locker room hot, bringing their lead to seven on free throws from Damika Martinez extending the score to 34-27 at the 18:45 mark. Siena would tie the game on a 16:50 layup by Hetzke at 36-36. Siena took a 1 point lead at 12:02 with a free throw by Kelly Symone. Adams would tie the game at 51-51 a piece with 7:03 to play. The Saints would take the lead for good at the 2:24 mark on a layup by Meghan Donohue, to make the score 58-57. Siena would finish the day with a 71-61 10 point victory.

Damika Martinez would finish with 12 points and nine assists, while Joy Adams contributed 13 points and four rebounds going six for six from the field.

Siena will face the Quinnipiac in the semifinals on Sunday at 11:00 p.m.
