Monmouth Edges Canisius to Advance to Semifinal of the MAAC Championship

ALBANY, N.Y.  – No. 4 Monmouth University edged No. 5 Canisius College, 60-54, in the quarterfinal round of the MAAC Men’s Basketball Championship at the Times Union Center in Albany, New York.

In the first half, Monmouth jumped out to its largest lead of the game at 11 points after a made layup from Collin Stewart making it a 25-14 contest at the 6:26 mark of the half. Canisius would respond by ending the half on a 13-2 run, knotting up the game at 27-27 heading into the locker room.

In the second half, Canisius got out to a five point lead early in the frame at 39-34, on a bucket from Jeremiah Williams at 13:29, before Monmouth would tie the contest back up at 39-39. A Monmouth three point shot by Max DiLeo with 11:34 remaining, would give the Hawks the lead for the final time in the game.

Justin Robinson scored a team high 16 points for Monmouth, while Deon Jones and Andrew Nicholas both added 11. Canisius was led by Williams with his game high of 18 points, and Kassius Robertson pitched in with 10 points of his own.

Monmouth will meet top seed Iona College on Sunday in the semifinal round of the championship at 4:30 p.m. on ESPN3.
