Offensive Player of the Week
Allison Gionta, Marist
Jr., Attack, 5-7, Eastport, N.Y./Eastport South Manor
Gionta led the Red Foxes in scoring in a 13-7 win at Niagara on April 8 and close 11-10 loss to Monmouth on April 11. She netted a career-high six goals against the Purple Eagles while also posting game highs with three assists and two caused turnovers. Against Monmouth, she followed up by scoring five goals on six shots and posted eight points. Gionta tallied 11 goals and six assists and was 2-for-4 on free position attempts in the pair of MAAC contests. She also picked up a pair of ground balls and won two draw controls.
Defensive Player of the Week
Kristina Vangeli, Monmouth
Jr., Defender, 6-0, Hillsborough, N.J./Hillsborough
Vangeli was a force defensively for Monmouth, while dominating draw controls for the Hawks in their 2-0 week. The junior had three caused turnovers and a pair of ground balls in Monmouth’s 12-6 win over Manhattan, which extended MU’s conference unbeaten streak to four games on Wednesday. In Saturday’s pivotal win over Marist, Vangeli recorded eight draw controls as the Hawks won 19 of the 23 draws in the match. The Hillsborough, N.J. native tallied a pair of caused turnovers and gathered four ground balls in the come from behind win over the Red Foxes. Vangeli finished with nine draws, six ground balls and five caused turnovers for the week.
Rookie of the Week
Erica Evans, Canisius
Fr., Midfield, 5-8, Peterborough, Ontario/St Peter’s Secondary
Freshman Erica Evans continued her hot-streak this week, helping lead the Blue and Gold to two critical conference victories, improving the team to 6-0 in the MAAC. Evans has been stellar all season for Canisius, scoring at least three goals in multiple games this season and that continued this week. On Wednesday, Evans scored three goals to help lead the Griffs to a 15-12 victory over the Saints and against second place Fairfield on the road on Saturday, Evans had a team and game-high five goals in an 11-10 victory for the Griffs, helping keep the team perfect in conference play. Overall Evans had eight goals, eight points, was 2-for-2 on free position shots, five ground balls, one draw control and two caused turnovers.
