Wagner Defeats Iona in the First Semifinal of the Water Polo Championship

POUGHKEEPSIE, N.Y. – Second-seed Wagner College defeated third-seed Iona College, 18-12, in the first semifinal of the 2015 MAAC Water Polo Championship, held at Marist College’s McCann Natatorium.
Wagner got out to an early 4-2 lead over Iona in the first period, and extended the lead to 10-5 at the half. Wagner did not let up before closing out the game with a final score of 18-12, outscoring Iona 5-3 in the third period to make the contest 15-8 heading into the final frame. Meghan Rodriguez scored a game-high five goals for the Seahawks, while Elise Begg, Lily Doerfler, Jess Lundgren, and Kimberly Watson all chipped in with three goals apiece and one score from Jessica Burdge.
The Gaels got two scores from Dana Andrea, Jordan Carmody, Paige Neary, and Taylor Silva, with one goal from Kayla Allen, Rebecca Koshy, Rebecca Mathews, and Hannah Schultz.
Wagner will play the winner of the second semifinal matchup between top-seed Marist College and fourth seeded Villanova University for the 2015 MAAC Water Polo Championship title at 2:00pm on Sunday, April 26. Iona will play the loser of the second semifinal matchup in the consolation game tomorrow at noon.
The winner of the MAAC Water Polo Championship will receive an automatic berth to the NCAA Division I Women's Water Polo Championship play in game. The selection show will take place on Monday, April 27.
