Marist Defeats Villanova in the Second Semifinal of the Water Polo Championship

POUGHKEEPSIE, N.Y. – Top-seed Marist College defeated fourth-seed Villanova University, 15-9, in the second semifinal of the 2015 MAAC Water Polo Championship, held at Marist College’s McCann Natatorium.
Marist opened up the game with a goal at the 6:45 mark of the first period taking a 1-0 lead over Villanova. Villanova would score the equalizing goal two minutes later to even up the contest at 1-1. Marist took a one-point advantage on two more occasions in the opening frame only to see it erased by Villanova as they answered each goal ending the first period at an even 3-3. The contest would tie once more at 5-5 before Marist scored three unanswered taking an 8-5 edge into the break. In the second half, Marist outscored Villanova 7-4, winning the contest by the score of 15-9 and advancing to the championship game. Marist’s Amanda Amorosa scored a game best four goals and Jessica Hamby pitched in with three. Brooke Else, Allison Hamby, Ann-Lena Hathway, and Nastassia McGlothlin all registered two goals in the game.
Sarina Shibata who scored three goals in the semifinal contest led Villanova. Villanova also got two goals from Sadie Dutcher and Lizzie Louwers, and one goal from Callan Edwards and Naomi Ng.
Marist will play the second-seed Wagner College in the 2015 MAAC Water Polo Championship title at 2:00pm on Sunday, April 26. Villanova will face third-seed Iona in the consolation game tomorrow at noon.
The winner of the MAAC Water Polo Championship will receive an automatic berth to the NCAA Water Polo Championship. The selection show will take place on Monday, April 27.
