Iona Defeats Villanova in the Consolation Game of the Water Polo Championship

POUGHKEEPSIE, N.Y. – Third-seed Iona College defeated fourth-seed Villanova University, 12-10, in the consolation game of the 2015 MAAC Water Polo Championship, held at Marist College’s McCann Natatorium.
Iona led Villanova 4-2 at the end of the first period of the game. In the second period, Villanova used a 5-0 run to take a 7-5 lead over Iona and an 8-6 edge into the half. Iona responded by shutting out Villanova in the third period, and using a 3-0 third to take a 9-8 lead into the final frame. Iona would go on to hold Villanova to just two second half goals and close out the third-place game with a 12-10 win. Kayla Allen, Jordan Carmody, and Paige Neary led the Gaels with two goals apiece. Dana Andrea, Sara Bortz, Meghan Mahoney, Rebecca Mathews, Hannah Schultz, and Monica Stiles all chipped in with one goal.
Villanova’s Sheila Gerrity scored a game-high three goals, while Sadie Dutcher and Sarina Shibata pitched in with two goals. Sara Lynn Abele, Lizzie Louwers, and Naomi Ng each scored one goal.
