MAAC Announces 2015 Women's Lacrosse Major Award Winners

BUFFALO, N.Y. - Canisius College claimed four of the five major awards, as voted by the league's nine head coaches, during the annual Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference (MAAC) Women's Lacrosse Awards Show.

Tori Quinn was selected as the unanimous Offensive Player of the Year for the third consecutive year, while teammate Erica Evans was named both the Midfielder of the Year and Rookie of the Year. Siena College’s Julia Sirianni claimed Defensive Player of the Year honors, while Canisius head coach Scott Teeter was voted amongst his peers as the Lids Team Sports Coach of the Year.

Quinn, a 5-3 senior attack from Orangeville, Ontario, who was also named the unanimous MAAC Preseason Player of the Year, finished the regular season as the MAAC leader with 72 total points, 35 assists, and a 2.06 assists per game average. She ranked fifth in the league in goals per game, averaging 2.18. On the defensive side of the ball, Quinn led the conference with 36 caused turnovers and caused 2.12 caused turnovers per outing, which also led the MAAC. She earned MAAC Offensive Player of the Week honors twice and Defensive Player of the Week honors once during the 2015 season. Quinn was also unanimously selected to the All-MAAC First Team, becoming a member for the third consecutive season.

Sirianni, ranked second in the conference in ground balls per game (2.67), draw controls per game (4.20), total caused turnovers (28), and caused turnovers per game (1.87). The 5-7 senior from Saratoga Springs, New York, also tallied 63 draw controls, good for third in the league, and 40 ground balls, good for fourth in the league. Sirianni was named MAAC Defensive Player of the Week on March 23 this season and earned a spot on the All-MAAC First Team after being named to the All-MAAC Second Team during the 2013 and 2014 seasons.

Freshman midfielder Evans, ranked fourth in the MAAC in scoring with 2.25 goals per game in her first season of collegiate women’s lacrosse. The Peterborough, Ontario, native tied for 10th in the league with 43 points and 2.69 points per contest, while also making a league-best four game-winning goals. Evans claimed a MAAC leading seven MAAC Rookie of the Week awards during the season including winning the award for six consecutive weeks from March 16 through April 20.

Teeter guided the Golden Griffins to the regular season title for only the second time in program history and the top overall seed in the MAAC Women’s Lacrosse Championship. In his 13th season at the helm of Canisius, Teeter led the Griffs to a perfect 8-0 MAAC record and an 11-6 overall mark, which included a non-conference schedule that featured four top-15 nationally ranked opponents. He was previously named MAAC Coach of the Year after the 2005 season.

The All-MAAC First Team consists of Canisius' Quinn, Marist’s Allison Gionta, Monmouth’s Marial Pierce, and Niagara’s Carrie Jo Farrugia at attack, with Pierce being a unanimous selection along with Quinn. The midfield is made up of Canisius’ Ashley Bull and Evans, and Marist’s Kara McHugh. At defense are Fairfield’s Meghan Reda, Marist’s Christine Astarita, Monmouth’s Kristina Vangeli who were unanimous, and Siena’s Sirianni. Fairfield’s Chelsey Sidaras at goalkeeper.

The Second Team features Cansius’ Taylor Giglio, Fairfield’s Riley Hellstein, Iona’s Mary Kate McCormick, Quinnipiac’s Kyra Ochwat, and Siena’s Alyssa Treanor at the attack position. Fairfield’s Alex Fehmel, Manhattan’s Megan Yarusso, Monmouth’s Allison Stathius, and Siena’s Lauren Smith make up the midfield. The defense includes Canisius’ Sami Franco, Fairfield’s Melissa Laible, Marist’s Sheri Fauvell, Niagara’s Kara Martin, and Quinnipiac’s Vicki Kuhn. The goalkeeper is Katie Donohue of Monmouth.

The All-Rookie team consists of Canisius' Evans, Nicole Nelson, and Lauren Smolensky, Fairfield’s Brenna Connelly, Iona’s Gabby Di Domizio and Jenna Tolzmann, Marist’s Morgan Jaycox, Monmouth’s Alexa Smith, Niagara’s Samantha Brill, Jillian Ford, and Grace Hunt, Quinnipiac’s Kiera Kelly, and Siena’s Emily Conway.
