Quinnipiac Takes First Men's Lacrosse Semifinal Win of 2015 to Advance to Championship

Poughkeepsie, N.Y. – The 2 seeded Quinnipiac defeated the 3 seeded Detroit, 16-9 in the first semifinal game of the 2015 Men's Lacrosse Championship at Tenney Stadium at Leonidoff Field on the campus of Marist College.

The game was neck and neck early on as the Titans got out to a quick 1-0 lead on a goal by Mike Birney. Quinnipiac tied up the contest and took the 2-1 lead on back to back goals from juniors Connor Meth and Ryan Keenan. Detroit tied up the contest with a goal by senior Brandon Beauregard with 3:30 remaining in the first quarter. Quinnipiac would rally and score seven consecutive goals, three in the first quarter. The Bobcat’s freshman attack Brian Feldman would contribute a hat trick while senior captain Mike Sagl, sophomore Kevin Deihl and senior Matt Kycia would each add a goal. Meth would also add another goal before the half to give Quinnipiac a 9-2 lead early in the game. Before the halves end Detroit’s Mark Anstead, the 2015 MAAC Rookie of the Year, would add a goal with under two minutes remaining to bring the score to 9-3 at the midway point.  

Play would become more even in the second half as the third quarter began. Both teams came out strong on defense, both allowing only one goal apiece through the first 11 minutes of play. At the 5:38 mark Quinnipiac would begin to score three consecutive goals, two by Kennan and another by Feldman to open the scoring 13-4. Detroit’s Scott Drummond would give the Titans a boost with a goal at the 2:12 mark to end the scoring in the third quarter.

The Titans came out stronger in the fourth quarter attempting to rally from nine down. Tyler Harper of Detroit would score to begin the fourth quarter, followed by a Bobcats goal from Sagl which was quickly topped with another Titans goal by JD Hess at the 9:05 mark bringing the score to 15-6. Titans Adams would score at the 7:17 mark moving Detroit back within eight. Quinnipiac’s Pat Corcoran would score with just over three minutes remaining before the Titans’ Adams would get his third marker of the match with one minute remaining in the game. The Bobcats would keep Detroit off the board for the remainder of the game to take the 16-9 victory and move on to the 2015 MAAC Men’s Lacrosse Championship Match.    

MAAC All-Rookie Team selection Feldman would lead all scorers finishing the game with five goals on eight shots while Sagl and Keenan each contributed three goals apiece. All-MAAC First Team member Adams would finish his final career game with the Titans with a hat trick on three goals to lead Detroit. Qunnipiac’s Meth would add four assists on the night. Each team would have seven players score goals, 14 total for the game. Bobcats Jack Brust would make 13 saves in the game while Detroit’s Jason Weber would have 11 of his own.

Quinnipiac will play the winner of the semifinal of the first seeded Marist Red Foxes and the fourth seeded Monmouth Hawks.

The championship game will begin on Saturday, May 2 at 2pm at Marist College's Tenney Stadium at Leonidoff Field and can be seen live on Time Warner Cable and ESPN3.
