Canisius Earns a Semifinal Win over Marist in the Women's Lacrosse Championship

BUFFALO, N.Y. – Top-seeded Canisius College defeated fifth-seed Marist College 15-7 in the second semifinal of the 2015 Women’s Lacrosse Championship in Buffalo, New York at Demske Sports Complex on the campus of Canisius College.

Marist opened up the game on a 3-1 run, scoring two goals in a 1:04 span. Canisius would cut the deficit to 3-2 after a goal from Tori Quinn, and then answered with back-to-back goals from Taylor Giglio in 34 seconds, giving Canisius a 4-3 lead. The Griffs took a 6-4 advantage into the break. In the second half, Canisius scored the first six goals of the half, going on a 6-0 run to extend its lead to 12-4 with 5:51 left in the game after an Erica Evans goal. The Golden Griffins would finish up the game scoring five more goals, while Marist scored its three goals all under the five minute mark of the half.

Canisius was led by Giglio’s four goals, and Ashley Bull’s three. Evans added two goals, while Meghan Cuddy, Caroline Ogden, Whitley Perry, Lauren Smolensky, Allie Stewart, and Tori Quinn all found the back of the net once.

Lexi Brannigan and Kirsten Viscount each scored two goals, while Jackie DiMaria, Allison Gionta, and Kara McHugh scored one.

Canisius goalkeeper Kayla Scully made eight saves in goal, while Marist Abigail Witczak had seven stops.

Canisius moves into the title game for the fifth consecutive season and will face second-seed Fairfield University on Sunday, May 3 at 12:00 p.m. live on Time Warner Cable and ESPN3.

The winner of the 2015 MAAC Women’s Lacrosse Championship earns the league’s automatic bid to the 2015 NCAA Division I Women’s Lacrosse Championship. The NCAA Division I selection announcement will take place on Sunday, May 3 at 9:00 p.m. on NCAA.com.
