Monmouth Men and Women Lead After Day 1 of 2015 Outdoor Track and Field Championships

West Long Branch, N.J. - The Monmouth men’s and women’s outdoor track and field teams are atop the leaderboards following the first day of action at the 2015 MAAC Outdoor Track and Field Championships, held at the Kessler Field at Monmouth University. The Hawks' men’s squad enters the second day with 61 points in front of second-place Manhattan who earned 51 points, while the Monmouth women’s team has 67 points, and the Jaspers are in second with 52 points.

Rounding out the men’s scoring was third-place Rider (50), fourth-place Iona (45), tied for fifth place are Canisius and Marist with 12 points each, and seventh-place Saint Peter’s (2). Rounding out the women’s scoring were third-place Rider (43), fourth-place Quinnipiac (37), fifth-place Iona (23), sixth-place Saint Peter’s (16), seventh-place Marist (14), eight-place Canisius (12), and in ninth, Niagara (8).

Events of the Day:

In the women’s hammer throw, Manhattan’s Lydia Wehrli won with an effort of 55.81m. Wehrli was the champion at last year’s championship. 

In the men’s shot put, Monmouth’s Taylor Bernstein came in first with a throw of 17.85m.

In the women’s long jump, Manhattan’s Doreen Horschig was the top finisher with a jump of 5.70m.

In the women’s pole vault, Manhattan’s Marissa Robbins set a new MAAC Championship record en route to a first-place finish with a mark of 3.65m.

In the men’s hammer throw, Love Litzell continued his stellar season with a final throw of 60.39m, good for first.

In the women’s shot put, Stephanie Lombardo of Rider came in first with an effort of 13.98m.

In the 3000m men’s steeplechase, Iona’s Xavier King took the top spot with a time of 8:52.36, setting a new MAAC Championship record in the event.

In the 3000m women’s steeplechase, Emily Ritter of Rider won with a time of 10:33.42.

In the 4x800 meter relay, Monmouth took home the top spot in both the men’s and women’s race. On the men’s side, the team of Andrew Langille, Domenick D'Agostino, Alex Leight and Dylan Capwell won with a time of 7:39.07, while the women’s team of Allie Wilson, Kendal Hand, Jenna Cupp, and Tionna Garner set a new MAAC Championship record with a time of 8:49.15.

In the men’s long jump, Shabazz Shuler of Rider won with a leap of 7.23m.

In the women’s 10,000 meter run, Rider’s Nicolette Mateescu won with a time of 36:24.44.

In the men’s 10,000 meter, run Gilbert Kirui of Iona won with a time of 30:21.69.
