Fairfield and Quinnipiac to Meet in 2016 MAAC Volleyball Championship Game

FAIRFIELD, CT – No. 1 Fairfield University will meet No. 3 Quinnipiac University in the 2016 MAAC Volleyball Championship Game on Sunday, November 20 at 2:00 p.m. at George Bisacca Court on the campus of Fairfield University. The game will air live on ESPN3.

Fairfield University defeated Siena College, 3-1 (25-20, 22-25, 25-18, 25-21) to advance to the 2016 MAAC Volleyball Championship Game. The Stags will play in the MAAC Volleyball Championship Game for the second consecutive season. Fairfield defeated Marist College, 3-1 to capture the 2015 MAAC Volleyball Championship, the eighth in program history.

Fairfield was led by senior middle blocker Megan O’Sullivan, who finished with 19 kills and six blocks. O’Sullivan hit a team-high .500 (19-for-36) en route to the semifinal victory. The 2016 MAAC Volleyball Player of the Year, Skyler Day recorded a double-double with a match-high 24 kills and 16 digs.

Stags’ junior outside hitter Megan Theiller recorded 16 kills and 12 digs for a double-double. The junior added three assists, two aces, and two blocks in the victory. Theiller became the third student-athlete in program history to record 1,000 kills and 1,000 digs in a career. Sophomore libero Mallory Bechtold recorded a team-high 25 digs.

Quinnipiac University defeated Marist College, 3-1 (25-18, 22-25, 25-23, 26-24) to advance to the 2016 MAAC Volleyball Championship Game. The Bobcats will play in their first MAAC Volleyball Championship Game in program history.

Quinnipiac’s sophomore setter Kat Miller recorded a double-double in the Bobcats’ semifinal victory. Miller finished the match with a team-high 13 kills and 10 digs. The sophomore added four blocks on the evening.

Bobcats’ junior middle hitter Elizabeth Kloos registered 10 kills and four blocks. Kloos hit a team-high .381 (10-for-21) en route to victory. Senior middle hitter Allison Leigh notched eight kills, three blocks, and hit .350 (8-for-20). Sophomore outside hitter Jen Coffey recorded 12 kills and freshman setter Maria Pansari tallied a match-high 43 assists, seven digs, and three aces.

Fairfield and Quinnipiac have met twice this season, with the Stags winning both matchups. Fairfield took the first meeting on October 8, 3-0 (25-22, 25-23, 25-15). The teams would meet again on November 12 and the Stags earned a win in four sets (25-22, 22-25, 25-17, 26-24).

The 2016 MAAC Volleyball Champion will earn the league’s automatic bid to the NCAA Volleyball Tournament. The NCAA Volleyball selection show airs on Sunday, November 27 at 9 p.m. on ESPNU.
