Monmouth University Wins 2016 MAAC Field Hockey Championship in Double OT

WEST LONG BRANCH, NJ – After not playing a single overtime contest for the entire 2016 MAAC Field Hockey Regular Season, the 2016 MAAC Field Hockey Champions, Monmouth University needed two overtimes to defeat two seeded Fairfield University 3-2 to take the title. The Hawks also needed overtime in its 3-2 semifinals victory over Rider University.
The golden goal was scored by 2016 MAAC Field Hockey Offensive Player of the Year, Alyssa Ercolino on an assist from Julie Laszlo at the 88:48 mark in the second extra set of 15. Laszlo, the 2016 unanimous MAAC Field Hockey Player of the Year, had one goal and two assists in this championship final.
Fairfield held a 2-1 lead when Emma Clark scored her 12th goal of the season, just 1:05 after Julie de Paeuw tied the game for the Stags at the 50:50 mark.
Monmouth tied the game with 10 seconds left in regulation when Georgia Garden-Bachop put the game-tying goal in the back of the cage off the assist from Laszlo and Meg Donahue.
Monmouth awaits its NCAA Tournament fate. The NCAA Field Hockey Selection show is tonight, Sunday, November 06 at 10 p.m.
