MAAC Announces 2015-16 MAAC Women's All-Rookie Team

EDISON, NJ – The Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference announces the 2015-16 MAAC Women’s Basketball All-Rookie Team as selected by the league’s 11 head coaches.

The tem is composed of Maria Welch from Canisius College, Alexis Lewis from Iona College, Aryn McClure and Paula Strautmane of Quinnipiac University and Jackie Benitez from Siena College. One of these five freshmen will be named the 2015-16 MAAC Women’s Basketball Rookie of the Year at the Postseason Awards Show located at the Renaissance Hotel Ballroom on Friday, March 4 at 5:00 p.m. The show will be broadcast live on ESPN3.

Welch, a 5-foot-11, freshman guard from Erie, PA, was a threat from beyond the arc this season for the Griffs. She ranked eighth in the MAAC with a 36.2 three-point shooting percentage and ranked ninth in the MAAC with 1.6 made three-pointers per game. Welch was named MAAC Rookie of the Week on February 22.

Lewis, a 5-foot-10, freshman guard from Pittston, PA, ranked second among freshman with 9.3 points per game and fifth in the conference in three-point field goal percentage, shooting 37.2 percent from long distance. Lewis was named MAAC Rookie of the Week on December 14.

McClure, a 5-foot-11 freshman guard/forward from Springfield Gardens, NY was named MAAC Rookie of the Week four times this season for the Bobcats. McClure was fourth in the conference with a 46.9 field goal percentage and ranked seventh in the MAAC with 1.6 blocked shots per game. She also ranked tenth in the conference with 6.9 rebounds per game. McClure was a unanimous selection to the All-Rookie Team.

Strautmane, a 6-foot freshman forward from Mucenieki, Lativa is a three-time MAAC Rookie of the Week. She ranked fourth in offensive rebounds, averaging 2.9 per game and eighth in the MAAC with 1.3 blocked shots per game. She was a unanimous selection to the All-Rookie team.

Benitez, a 5-foot-10 freshman guard from Tobyhanna, PA led all freshmen in scoring with 10.3 points per game. She ranked first in the MAAC with an 84.0 free-throw percentage and sixth with 1.8 steals per game. Benitez was a unanimous selection to the All-Rookie team.
