Travis Mistretta, Iona
Sr., OF, 6-0, Manchester, CT/Avon Old Farms
Senior outfielder Travis Mistretta was the standout player for the Gaels this past week. After an 0-4 in Tuesday’s 5-2 loss to St. John’s. Micstretta bounced back, going 3 for 5 with 3 RBI in Wednesday’s 13-8 loss at Rutgers. In Friday’s 6-5 win over UNC Asheville, Mistretta went 2 for 4 on the day with two runs scored. He continued his hot hitting into Saturday to help the Gaels sweep UNC Asheville. In the game one’s 10-9 win game, Mistretta went 3 for 5 with an RBI and run scored. Game two was a 14-4 rout for the Gaels, Mistretta went off going 3 for 4 with 6 RBI, which featured a double and HR.
Pitcher of the Week
John Leiter, Saint Peter’s
Sr., RHP, 6-0, Toms River,NJ/Toms River South
Leiter tossed his first career nine-inning complete-game shutout after allowing only two hits and one walk with eight strikeouts on the afternoon. The senior had a complete-game seven-inning shutout against Iona on Apr. 18 last year for his first collegiate shutout. Leiter retired the first 10 batters he faced and then the senior retired 10 of the final 11 batters he faced in his second career complete-game shutout.
Rookie of the Week
Sean Breen, Iona
Fr., INF, 5-10, Turnersville, NJ/Gloucester Catholic
Freshman second baseman Sean Breen was the standout rookie for the Gaels this past week. In Tuesday’s 5-2 loss to St. John’s, Breen went 2 for 4 with a triple and RBI. After a hitless game in 13-8 loss to Rutgers, Breen bounced back against UNC Asheville going 1 for 4 with an RBI in Friday’s 6-5 win. In Game one’s 10-9 win, Breen went 4 for 5 with a double and 4 RBI’s plus 2 runs scored. He finished the week with a .350 average with 7 hits and 7 RBI’s.
