Monmouth University Hawks Move Onto MAAC Women's Basketball Championship Semifinal

ALBANY, NY – The fourth and final quarterfinal matchup of the 2016 MAAC Women’s Basketball Championship saw the fifth seeded, Monmouth University Hawks, defeat fourth seeded Fairfield University, 64-46 at the Times Union Center.

The Hawks were led by Tyese Purvis who had a game-high 14 points on four-for-eight shooting. Jasmine Walker added 10 points and four rebounds for the Hawks, who held Fairfield University to 27% shooting from the field. Monmouth University held the edge with points in the paint, outscoring the Stags 32-20 in that category. The Hawks also outscored the Stags 24-2 in bench points.

For the Stags, All-MAAC Third team selections Casey Smith and Kelsey Carey both scored in double-digits. Carey finished with 15 and Smith added 14 in the defeat. Samantha Cooper posted a double-double with 10 points and 12 rebounds.

Monmouth University now moves onto the MAAC Women’s Basketball Championship semifinal to face top seeded Quinnipiac University on Sunday, March 6 at 11:30 a.m. on ESPN3.

The 2016 MAAC Women’s Championship title game will take place on Monday, March 7 at 2:30 p.m. and will air live on ESPNU with the winner earning the leagues automatic bid to the NCAA Championship.
