Offensive Player of the Week

Lauren Smolensky, Canisius

So., A, 5-0, Rochester, NY/Brighton High School

Smolensy was a major factor in both wins for the Griffs this week, guiding the team to its second consecutive MAAC Regular Season Championship. Smolensky recorded two goals and five assists in teams 17-6 win over Marist on Wednesday, recording career highs in both assists and points. She was a large factor in the team’s 7-0 run to begin the game against Marist assisting on three of the seven goals, while scoring the fifth for the blue and gold. In the win 16-3 over Iona on Saturday, Smolensky added two goals and two assists to her stat sheet, once again jump starting the offense, assisting on the first goal of the day and scoring the third in a 10-1 run to begin the game. The sophomore currently leads the team in assists with 16.

Defensive Player of the Week

Erica Evans, Canisius

So., M, 5-8, Peterborough, Ontario/St. Peter’s Secondary

Evans led the Golden Griffins to a 17-6 victory over Marist Wednesday afternoon, recording six goals and two assists, including four of the team’s first seven in an opening 7-0 run. In the Griffs 16-3 win over Iona on Saturday, Evans passed the 50 goal mark for the season (7th time in Canisius history) and is now tied for fourth most goals in a season by a Griff at 53. She once again scored six goals while leading in every other major statistical category, draw controls (3), caused turnovers (3) and ground balls (4). She was as catalyst in the second half scoring three goals in the first five minutes of the half to secure the game. Evans has scored at least five goals seven times this year.

Rookie of the Week

Jourdan Roemer, Canisius

Fr., A, 5-7, Irondequoit, NY/West Irondequoit

Roemer set career highs in both assists and points in the 16-3 win over Iona on Saturday, scoring the team’s first goal of the day while scoring again and assisting on four before the end of the first half.  In the victory, Roemer recorded her 30th point of the season.  In the 17-6 win over Marist, Roemer recorded three assists along with three draw controls. The freshman is tied for third on the team in points (32) and second in assists (15).
