Monmouth Defeats Iona to Advance to MAAC Women's Lacrosse Semifinals

WEST LONG BRANCH, NJ – The third seeded Monmouth Hawks defeated the sixth seeded Iona Gaels, 13-7 in opening round action of the 2016 MAAC Women’s Lacrosse Championship. The Hawks will now take on second seeded Marist on Friday, May 6 at 4:00 p.m. on ESPN3 at host school Canisius College in Buffalo, New York.

Hawks goalkeeper Caroline Huelster had a strong performance in the net, recording a career-high 15 saves to post a .682 save percentage in 60 minutes of action. Seven different Hawks found the back of the net in this opening round contest. Caroline Corbliss and Alexa Smith posted hat tricks for Monmouth. Smith added three assists, three groundballs and one caused turnover. Kristina Vangeli posted six draw controls, three caused turnovers and two groundballs.

For the Gaels, Mary Kate McCormick had a hat trick in the defeat. Erin Pugh, Pamela Giordano and Christine Gioronda all scored a goal for Iona. Kristian Wasdick picked up four groundballs.
