Marist Defeats Iona to Advance to the Championship Game

POUGHKEEPSIE, NY – Second seeded Marist College defeated third seeded Iona College, 11-8 in the second semifinal contest of the 2016 MAAC Water Polo Championship, advancing to its third consecutive championship final.
Marist scored first and early in the first quarter to get on the board, but Iona’s Hannah Schulz and All-MAAC First Team Selection responded with a goal of her own to tie the game at 1-1. The Red Foxes scored three more goals again to end the first period leading the Gaels, 4-1. During the second period Sophomore 2-Meter Kayla Allen added a goal for the Gaels to cut the deficit to 4-2. Junior Utility Amanda Amorosa and Freshman Center Grace Doerfler both added goals of their own for Marist, giving the Red Foxes a halftime lead of, 6-2, over the Gaels.
Iona would come out strong in the second half, outscoring Marist 6-5 in the half. MAAC Freshman of the Year & All-MAAC Second Team Selection Katie Tijerina scored a hat trick in the third period, helping her team keep the edge over Iona. The Gaels would eventually fall to Marist, 11-8.
Marist will play Wagner in the 2016 MAAC Water Polo Championship title at 2:00PM on Sunday, May 1. Iona will play Villanova in the consolation game tomorrow at noon.
The Red Foxes have met the Seahawks in the title for three consecutive years since 2014.
The winner of the MAAC Water Polo Championship will receive an automatic bid to the NCAA Water Polo Championship. The selection show will take place on Monday May 2.
