Three-Run Homer By Freese in the 7th Lifts Monmouth Over Manhattan 5-2

POUGHKEEPSIE, NY – It was a tied game at two when Monmouth’s Jill Freese stepped up to the plate in the top of the seventh inning when she hit a three-run home run over the left field fence to give the Hawks a 5-2 lead. Starting pitcher Amanda Riley would shut the Jaspers down in order in the bottom of the 7th to seal the win for Monmouth. Riley struck out four, gave up two runs while walking four over seven innings of work. Manhattan is eliminated from the 2016 MAAC Softball Championship.
The Jaspers got on the board in the bottom of the third inning when Anna Crowley hit a home run to bring the Jaspers within 2-1. In the next inning, Vasquez would score on an E-4 to tie the game at 2. It wad tied up until the seventh inning when Freese took Briana Matazinsky deep and broke the tie. Monmouth will play the winner of Canisius/Fairfield, which takes place today at 4:30 p.m.
The 2016 MAAC Softball Championship is a double elimination style tournament with the championship final taking place on Saturday, May 14 at noon. If the team coming out of the loser’s bracket defeats the team in the winners’ bracket, the second and deciding game will take place at 2:30 p.m.
The winner of the 2016 MAAC Softball Championship will earn an automatic bid into the NCAA Championship. The NCAA Softball Selection Show is on Sunday, May 15 on ESPNU at 10:00 p.m.
