Marist College Walks-Off To Win 2016 MAAC Softball Championship

POUGHKEEPSIE, NY – Brittany Colombo delivered the walk-off single in the bottom of the seventh inning to give Marist College the 3-2 victory over Monmouth University to win the 2016 MAAC Softball Championship.

Janna Korak led off the frame with a single, Colleen McWilliams walked. With one out, Colombo singled off the the third baseman’s glove and 2016 MAAC Softball Coach of the Year, Joe Ausanio sent Korak home from third base. Korak slid under the tag and was safe at the plate. This is Marist’s third MAAC Softball Championship title in program history.

Marist got on the board in the first inning when Claire Oberdorf hit a home run to center field. Kyrsten Van Natta homered to left field in the bottom of the fourth inning to make it 2-0 Red Foxes. Jill Freese hit a two-run home run for the Hawks to tie the game in the bottom of the sixth inning.

The 2016 MAAC Softball Most Valuable Player is Jayne Oberdorf. She went 3-0 with three complete games, pitching to an 0.67 ERA while striking out 23 hitters in this championship.

Marist College earns an automatic bid into the NCAA Championship. The NCAA Softball Selection Show is on Sunday, May 15 on ESPNU at 10:00 p.m.
