MAAC Announces 2016 Baseball Major Award Winners

FISHKILL, NY – The 2016 Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference (MAAC) Baseball major awards winners were voted upon by the leagues 11 head coaches and announced during the 2016 MAAC Baseball awards banquet on Tuesday evening.
Christian Santisteban from Manhattan College was selected as the 2016 MAAC Baseball Player of the Year. Santisteban hit .376 for the Jaspers with seven home runs and 45 RBI. His 71 hits are tied for second best in the conference. He was third in the MAAC with 19 doubles and second with 111 total bases. Santisteban was also voted as the Preseason Player of the Year back in February.
Santisteban’s teammate, Fabian Pena was voted as the 2016 MAAC Baseball Rookie of the Year. Pena was named MAAC Rookie of the Week four times this season while hitting .344 for the Jaspers. Pena ranked first in the MAAC with 113 total bases and 21 doubles, second with 47 RBI, fourth with 67 hits while reaching base at a .412 mark.
Monmouth University’s Ricky Dennis was named the 2016 MAAC Pitcher of the Year. Dennis went 6-2 in MAAC play pitching to a 2.22 ERA. He struck out 34 hitters over 48.2 innings pitched against conference opponents, holding hitters to a .232 batting average. Dennis was named MAAC Pitcher of the Week on March 22.
Iannick Remillard recorded 16 saves for the Canisius College Golden Griffs to be named the 2016 MAAC Baseball Relief Pitcher of the Year. Remillard struck out 28 hitters over 30 innings pitched as the lockdown specialist for the Griffs. He held opponents to a .155 batting average, pitching to a 2.10 ERA out of the bullpen.
The 2016 MAAC Baseball Lids Team Sports Coach of the Year is Bill Currier from Fairfield University. His Stags went 17-7 in the MAAC and 29-24 overall to capture its first regular season title since 1983 and earn the top overall seed for this week’s championship.
The All-MAAC First Team infield includes, catcher Fabian Pena from Manhattan College, Shaine Hughes, a unanimous selection at first base from Monmouth University, Siena College’s Jordan Bishop at second base, Grant Lamberton was a unanimous selection at third base from Monmouth University and rounding out the All-MAAC infield is Anthony Massicci from Canisius College. The All-MAAC First Team outfield includes Jake Salpietro from Fairfield University, Christian Santisteban from Manhattan College, and Dan Shea from Monmouth. Frankie Gregoire from Fairfield University made the All-MAAC First Team as the designated hitter while Rob Moore from Saint Peter’s University was voted to the All-MAAC First Team in the utility spot. Representing the pitchers on the All-MAAC First Team are MAAC Pitcher of the Year Ricky Dennis, Kyano Cummings from Siena College and Thomas Jankins from Quinnipiac University.
The All-MAAC Second Team is composed of catcher Kevin Radziewicz from Fairfield University, Joe Drpich from Siena College at first base, Jake Lumley from Canisius College at second base, Fran Kinsey from Iona College at third base and Matt Batten from Quinnipiac University at shortstop. The outfielders are Tanner Kirwer from Niagara University and Siena College teammates Fred Smart and Dan Swain. The Fairfield University duo of Troy Scocca and Mac Crispino were voted to the All-MAAC Second Team as the designated hitter and utility, respectively. On the hill, pitchers Kyle Dube from Fairfield University, Joe DeRosa from Iona College, Nick Margevicius from Rider University, and the 2016 MAAC Relief Pitcher of the Year, Iannick Remillard from Canisius College were all named to the All-MAAC Second Team.
