Canisius Beats Marist 15-8 Behind 21 Hits in Game 2 of the 2016 Baseball Championship

FISHKILL, NY – No. 4 Canisius beat No.5 Marist, 15-8, in game 2 of the 2016 MAAC Baseball Championship. Canisius advances in the winner’s bracket to face No. 2 Siena tomorrow at noon, while Marist will play tomorrow at 3:30pm against No.3 Monmouth in an elimination game.
With the contest tied at 1-1 in the bottom of the third inning, Canisius put together an eight run rally on eight hits and one error, giving them a 9-1 lead. Marist responded in the top of the fourth with a five-run rally of its own, cutting its deficit to three runs at 9-6. Another Canisius rally in the bottom of the fifth on five runs and five hits would extend the score again to 14-6. Both teams added a run in the sixth making the score, 15-7, before Marist added one last run in the top of the ninth to make the final score 15-8.
Canisius set a program tournament record with its 21 hits in the game and was one run shy of matching its championship best of 16 runs (2008 vs. Manhattan).
Aaron Casper of Canisius earned the victory after pitching 3.0 innings in relief.
The 2016 MAAC Baseball Championship is a double-elimination style tournament. The championship game takes place on Saturday, May 28 at noon with the, if necessary game taking place at 3:30 p.m.
The winner of the 2016 MAAC Baseball Championship will earn an automatic bid into the NCAA Championship. The NCAA Baseball Selection Show will be on Monday, May 30 on ESPNU at noon.
