Fairfield Edges Manhattan 5-2 in Game 3 of the 2016 Baseball Championship

FISHKILL, NY – Top seeded Fairfield edged No.6 Manhattan, 5-2, in game 3 of the 2016 MAAC Baseball Championship. Fairfield advances in the winner’s bracket to face the winner of No. 2 Siena and No. 4 Canisius on Friday, May 27 at noon, while Manhattan will play tomorrow at 7:00pm against the winner of No.3 Monmouth and No. 5 Marist in an elimination game.
With a scoreless contest in the top half of the fourth, MAAC Rookie of the Year Fabian Pena hit a solo home run to left field to break the tie and give Manhattan a 1-0 lead. Fairfield wasted no time, earning a run in the bottom of the fourth on an RBI single from Jake Salpietro, and an insurance run off a single up the middle by Mac Crispino, which brought Salpietro home giving Fairfield a 2-1 advantage.
Fairfield’s three-run bottom half of the seventh which was led off by a Troy Scocca solo home run to right center, extended the Stags lead to 5-1. Manhattan added a run in the top of the eighth, to make the final score 5-2.
Fairfield starting pitcher, Gavin Wallace threw six strikeouts in 7.2 innings, earning the win in the game, while Mike Bonaiuto picked up the save.
The 2016 MAAC Baseball Championship is a double-elimination style tournament. The championship game takes place on Saturday, May 28 at noon with the, if necessary game taking place at 3:30 p.m.
The winner of the 2016 MAAC Baseball Championship will earn an automatic bid into the NCAA Championship. The NCAA Baseball Selection Show will be on Monday, May 30 on ESPNU at noon.
