Canisius Tops Siena 8-4 in Game 4 of the 2016 Baseball Championship

FISHKILL, NY – No. 4 Canisius topped No.2 Siena, 8-4, in game 4 of the 2016 MAAC Baseball Championship. Canisius advances in the winner’s bracket to face No. 1 Fairfield on Friday, May 27 at noon, while Siena will play tomorrow at 3:30pm against the winner of No.6 Manhattan and No. 3 Monmouth/No. 5 Marist in an elimination game.

Siena struck first, scoring one run early in the first inning on an RBI single to center by Jordan Folgers, sending Dan Swain across home plate to take a 1-0 lead. In the top of the second, Canisius scored the tying and go ahead runs on an RBI single by Tim Kensinger which brought Christ Conley and Mark McKenna in for the two runs, making it 2-1. Siena would respond and tie up the contest at 2-2 in the bottom of the second.

A sac fly in the bottom of the third, gave Siena the lead again, putting the Saints up 3-2, but Canisius would again tie the contest in the top of the fifth, knotting the contest at 3-3. Ryan Stekl would score the go ahead run in the inning on a single to left field by McKenna, giving Canisius a 4-3 lead. The Griffs would extend its lead in the top of the sixth on a two-run double by Stekl, making the score 6-3, and added another run in the top of the seventh making the score 7-3. Both teams scored one more run each in the game to end the matchup at 8-4.

Mike Elmwood earned the win after pitching 5.0 innings in relief for Canisius, including a stretch of retiring eight straight batters, while MAAC Relief Pitcher of the Year, Iannick Remillard picked up the save.

The 2016 MAAC Baseball Championship is a double-elimination style tournament. The championship game takes place on Saturday, May 28 at noon with the, if necessary game taking place at 3:30 p.m.

The winner of the 2016 MAAC Baseball Championship will earn an automatic bid into the NCAA Championship. The NCAA Baseball Selection Show will be on Monday, May 30 on ESPNU at noon.
