Monmouth Eliminates Marist from 2016 Baseball Championship

FISHKILL, NY – No. 3 Monmouth defeated No.5 Marist, 9-6, in game 5 of the 2016 MAAC Baseball Championship. Monmouth advances in the loser’s bracket to face No. 6 Manhattan later on tonight, while Marist season comes to an end.

With the game knotted at 0-0, Marist put together a four-run top of the third inning rally, jumping out to a 4-0 lead. Monmouth responded in the bottom half of the third inning on an RBI single by Chris Gaetano, putting the Hawks on the board at 4-1.

Frankie Gregiore’s solo home run in the top of the fifth extended the Red Foxes lead to 5-1, but again Monmouth would respond, this time putting together a fifth inning four-run rally which got started by a Dan Shea homer over the right field fence to make the score 5-2. Robbie Alessandrine then tied the game at 5-5 after hitting a double that cleared the bases bringing in three more runs.

Monmouth kept the momentum going right into the sixth inning, logging three more runs on three hits to take its first lead of the evening at 8-5, and would hold onto the lead, ending the game with a 9-6 final.  

Monmouth starting pitcher, Ricky Dennis earned the victory and Justin Andrews received the save.

The 2016 MAAC Baseball Championship is a double-elimination style tournament. The championship game takes place on Saturday, May 28 at noon with the, if necessary game taking place at 3:30 p.m.

The winner of the 2016 MAAC Baseball Championship will earn an automatic bid into the NCAA Championship. The NCAA Baseball Selection Show will be on Monday, May 30 on ESPNU at noon.
