Siena Eliminates Manhattan from 2016 MAAC Baseball Championship

FISHKILL, NY – No. 2 Siena defeated No.6 Manhattan, 15-4, in game 8 of the 2016 MAAC Baseball Championship and advances to play No. 4 Canisius tonight at 8:45pm for a trip to the championship series against No. 1 Fairfield.

MAAC Rookie of the Year, Fabian Pena hit a two-run home run to put Manhattan on the board early in the first inning, making it 2-0. In the bottom of the first, Siena put together a four-run rally which was ignited by Fred Smart’s two RBI single that scored Jordan Folgers and Jordan Bishop.

In the bottom of the fourth, Siena pushed its lead to 7-2, scoring on a wild pitch and a two-run single by Bishop, but Manhattan wasted no time scoring two runs of its own in the top of the fifth to make it 7-4.

A five run, four hit, three error, seventh inning for Siena would extend the Saints lead to 12-4, and Siena would add three more runs in the bottom of the eighth making the score 15-4.

Siena’s starting pitcher, Tommy Miller earned the win in the victory, while Bryan Goossens picked up the save.

The 2016 MAAC Baseball Championship is a double-elimination style tournament. The championship game takes place on Saturday, May 28 at noon with the, if necessary game taking place at 3:30 p.m.

The winner of the 2016 MAAC Baseball Championship will earn an automatic bid into the NCAA Championship. The NCAA Baseball Selection Show will be on Monday, May 30 on ESPNU at noon.
