Fairfield Wins its First MAAC Baseball Championship in Program History

FISHKILL, NY – MAAC Regular Season Champion and No. 1 seed, Fairfield University defeated No.2 Siena College, 18-2, in the championship series of the 2016 MAAC Baseball Championship. With the win, Fairfield earns its first ever trip to the NCAA tournament and claims its fourth overall MAAC Baseball title (1983, 1991, 1993 [no tournament was held from 1982-1993]).

Fairfield set MAAC championship series records for most runs (18) and largest margin of victory (16) en route to claiming its first baseball tournament championship in program history (Siena over Rider, 16-2 in 1999). The Stags scored runs in every inning except the second and eighth, putting together scoring innings of two, two, three, one, four, and six for a total of 18. The Stags were led offensively in the championship game by Kevin Radziewicz, who went four-for-five and recorded five RBIs and scored one run, and Championship MVP, Jake Salpiertro who batted three-for-five with three RBIs and three runs scored.

Joining Salpiertro, on the All-Championship team squad are teammates, Drew Arciuolo, Michael Conti, Jack Gethings, and Kevin Radziewicz. Also earning spots on the team were Chris Amorosi, Bryan Goossens, and Phil Madonna from Siena, Jake Lumley and Anthony Massicci of Canisius, and Joe Jacques and Fabian Pena from Manhattan.

Fairfield will earn an automatic bid into the NCAA Championship. The NCAA Baseball Selection Show will be on Monday, May 30 on ESPNU at noon.
