2017 MAAC Field Hockey Championship Field is Set
EDISON, NJ – Following the conclusion of the 2017 Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference (MAAC) Field Hockey regular season, the championship field is set.
For the fourth consecutive season, Monmouth University is the regular season champion. The Hawks will serve as the championship host and number one seed after finishing 5-1 in conference play. Monmouth was ranked nationally at No. 25 in the NFHCA Poll on two separate occasions this season. Monmouth will face fourth seeded Rider University on Friday, November 3. Monmouth had seven student-athletes record 20 or more points this season, with reigning MAAC Player and Defensive Player of the Year, Julie Laszlo, leading the way with 39 points (8G, 23A).
LIU Brooklyn finished 4-2 in MAAC play to earn the second seed by virtue of the head-to-head tiebreaker over Fairfield. The Blackbirds are in the MAAC Field Hockey Championship for the first time in program history, just its second season as a varsity program. Under first-year head coach Kyle DeSandes-Moyer, the Blackbirds earned its first-ever program victory when they defeated Fairfield, 2-1, on September 29. The Blackbirds and the third seeded Stags meet again in semifinal action on Friday, November 3.
Fairfield earned the third seed after finishing 4-2 in conference play. The Stags are led offensively by Andrea Soler who led Fairfield in goals (7) and points (17). Fairfield looks to make it to the MAAC Field Hockey Championship final for the third consecutive season, last winning it all in 2015.
Rider University finished the regular season with a 3-3 mark in conference play. The Broncs have qualified for the MAAC Field Hockey Championship for the fifth-straight season. Freshman goalkeeper Lena Vandam recorded five shutouts in her rookie campaign, posting a .778 save percentage and a 1.51 goals against average.
The 2017 MAAC Field Hockey Championship Game takes place on Sunday, November 5 at So Sweet A Cat Field in West Long Branch, NJ. All game times are still to be determined.
