No. 13 Princeton University defeated Monmouth University, 4-0, in the first round of the 2017 NCAA Women’s Soccer Championship. The Hawks finish their season (15-4-2) after earning their second consecutive MAAC Championship.
The Tigers tallied two first half goals and added another two in the second half. Junior forward Mimi Asom scored two goals and tallied an assist in the win. Asom scored the game’s first goal in the sixth minute and followed with her second score of the evening in the 66
th minute.
Monmouth is the first team from the MAAC to advance to the NCAA Women’s Soccer Championship in back-to-back years since former member Loyola (MD) did so in five-straight seasons (2000-04).
The Hawks earned the league’s automatic bid to the NCAA Women’s Soccer Championship as a result of winning the conference Championship on November 1 at the ESPN Wide World of Sports Complex in Lake Buena Vista, FL. Monmouth defeated Manhattan College, 5-1, to secure its third MAAC Championship in program history.
Monmouth falls to (0-3) in NCAA Tournament games as a member of the MAAC. The Hawks are now (9-6) all-time against the Tigers, with their last win coming on November 3, 1998 (4-1). Princeton defeated Monmouth earlier this season, 3-0, on August 25.
About the 2017 NCAA Women’s Soccer Championship:
First-round games will be played Nov. 10, 11 and 12 at campus sites. Second-round games will be played Friday, Nov. 17 at campus sites and third-round games will be played Sunday, Nov. 19 at the same campus sites. Quarterfinal games will be played Nov. 24 or 25 also on campus sites.
The 36th annual NCAA Women’s College Cup will be played Dec. 1 and 3 at Orlando City Soccer Stadium in Orlando, Florida with UCF and Central Florida Sports Commission serving as co-hosts. The first national semifinal will be played and broadcast live on ESPNU at 5 p.m. Eastern time Friday, Dec. 1. The second semifinal will begin at approximately 7:30 p.m. Eastern time live on ESPNU. The national championship match will take place at noon Eastern time Sunday, Dec. 3 and will also broadcast live on ESPNU.
