No. 1 Fairfield University (25-6, 18-0 MAAC) defeated No. 3 Iona College (16-18, 11-7 MAAC) in straight-sets to claim its third consecutive MAAC Volleyball Championship and 10th in program history. The 10 MAAC Volleyball Championships are the most in conference history. The Stags earn the league’s automatic bid into the 2017 NCAA Volleyball Championship.
 
Fairfield Notes:
  • Today’s win marked the 51st in a row for the Stags against conference opponents, the longest streak in the nation. Fairfield has won 21-straight matches dating to September 12.
  • Fairfield has claimed five out of the last six MAAC Championships.
  • The Stags are the first team to win three-straight MAAC Volleyball Championships since Niagara University (2009-11). It is the second time in program history that Fairfield earned three consecutive MAAC Volleyball Championships, the Stags won five in a row (1997-2001).
  • Fairfield has won in straight-sets 16 times this season. The Stags won 12 of its last 13 matches in straight-sets, including six in a row.
  • Fairfield improves to (4-1) against Iona in the MAAC Championship and (1-1) in the Championship final.
  • 2017 MAAC Volleyball Player of the Year, senior outside hitter Skyler Day was named the Championship MVP. Day hit .367, tallied 14 kills, and nine digs in the Championship final.
  • 2017 MAAC Setter of the Year, sophomore Manuela Nicolini and freshman middle blocker Luci Albertson were named to the All-Championship Team. Nicolini dished out 37 assists and six blocks in the final. Albertson added five kills and four blocks.
  • Sophomore outside hitter/right side Mayda Garcia hit a match-high .778 and registered seven kills.
  • Senior outside hitter Megan Theiller recorded eight kills and 13 digs. 
  • The 2017 NCAA Volleyball selection show is on Sunday, November 26, at 9 p.m. on ESPNU.
Iona Notes:
  • The Gaels reached the MAAC Volleyball Championship final for the first time since 2010.
  • Junior middle blocker Mia Bonsignore and junior setter Emma Rose were named to the MAAC All-Championship Team. Bonsignore hit a team-high .400 and had six kills. Rose added 19 assists and three digs.
  • 2017 MAAC Rookie of the Year, Jamie Smith recorded a team-high seven kills. She added four blocks, three assists, and three digs.
  • 2017 All-MAAC First Team selection, junior outside hitter Claire Archibald registered five kills and five digs.
