WEST LONG BRANCH, NJ – For the second time in three years, Fairfield University claimed the MAAC Field Hockey Championship. Led by senior Hannah Pike’s two goals, the third seeded Stags defeated top seeded Monmouth University, 2-1, in the 2017 MAAC Field Hockey Championship Game. Pike was named MAAC Field Hockey Championship Most Valuable Player. She combined for five goals over two games in the MAAC Field Hockey Championship to earn MVP honors. Pike now has nine goals on the season.

The 2017 MAAC Field Hockey Offensive Player of the Year, Josephine van der Hoop of Monmouth, got the Hawks on the board early with a goal seven minutes into this championship contest on a pass from Kelly Hanna. Pike would answer in the 41st minute with a breakaway goal to tie the game for Fairfield. The game-winning goal came in the 56th minute on a pass from Lilly Auch off a corner.
Fairfield is the first three seed to win the MAAC Field Hockey Championship. When the Stags won the MAAC Field Hockey Championship in 2015, they were the fourth overall seed.

Fairfield earns its ninth win of the season and awaits their NCAA opponent. The 2017 NCAA Field Hockey Selection Show airs tonight, Sunday, November 5 at 10pm on NCAA.com
