No. 6 University of Texas defeated Fairfield University, 3-0, in the First Round of the 2017 NCAA Volleyball Championship. The Stags finish the season (25-7) after they earned their third-straight MAAC Volleyball Championship and 10
th in program history.
Fairfield Notes:
- All-MAAC Second Team selection, senior outside hitter Megan Theiller recorded a match-high 15 kills and notched eight digs.
- 2017 MAAC Player of the Year and All-MAAC First Team member, senior outside hitter Skyler Day registered eight kills and six digs.
- 2017 MAAC Setter of the Year and All-MAAC First Teamer, sophomore Manuela Nicolini dished out a team-high 27 assists. Junior defensive specialist Taylor Rudeen added a team-best 13 digs.
- 2017 MAAC All-Rookie Team selection, middle blocker Kaylie Butts totaled six kills and hit .333.
- The loss snapped the Stags’ 21-match winning streak, which was tied for the second longest in the nation coming into play this evening.
- Fairfield ended its streak of six consecutive straight-set wins.
- Tonight’s straight-set loss is the fourth of the season for the Stags and the first since they were swept by Washington State on September 9.
- Fairfield claimed five out of the last six MAAC Championships and are the first team to win three-straight titles since Niagara University (2009-11). It is the second time in program history that Fairfield earned three consecutive MAAC Volleyball Championships, the Stags won five in a row (1997-2001).
Texas Notes:
- The No. 6 seed and No. 2 nationally ranked Longhorns (25-2) advance to the second round of the 2017 NCAA Volleyball Championship.
- Senior middle blocker Chiaka Ogbogu hit a match-high .917 and recorded 11 kills.
- Sophomore outside hitter Micaya White hit .281, notched a team-high 12 kills, and added six digs. Freshman setter Ashley Shook registered a match-high 33 assists.
