Freshman Louie Pillari set a new career-high with 16 points as top-seeded Monmouth University defeated ninth seeded Niagara 84-59 in the first quarterfinals game of the 2017 MAAC Men’s Basketball Championships. Je’lon Hornbeak scored his 1,000th career point as a member of the Monmouth Hawks with his first basket of the game.
2016-17 MAAC Unanimous Player of the Year, Justin Robinson added 14 points on 50% shooting from the field. Senior center Chris Brady scored 13 points on six-of-seven shooting. The Hawks got key contributions from its bench, outscoring Niagara 42-24 in points off the bench.
Niagara had four players score in double-digits with Dominic Robb leading the way with a double-double posting 12 points and securing 11 rebounds. Chris Barton added 11 points and five rebounds in the defeat.
Monmouth awaits the winner of the #4 Siena/#5 Fairfield matchup on Sunday, March 5 at 4:30 pm on ESPN3.

With 0:42 seconds left on the clock, Jermaine Crumpton hit a three to pull Canisius with one of Saint Peter’s, 59-58. On the next possession, Trevis Wyche drove to the hoop and hit a layup to give Saint Peter’s a 61-58 lead. Isaiah Reese would put up a shot as time expired, but it hit the rim, giving Saint Peter’s the victory.
Quadir Welton led the Peacocks with 15 pints on five-of-nine shooting. Crumpton led all scorers with 18 points. Isaiah Reese finished the game with a double-double, scoring 19 points and grabbing 11 rebounds.
Saint Peter’s advances to the semifinals and will take on the winner of #3 Iona and #6 Rider on Sunday, March 5 at 7:00 pm on ESPN3.
