Wagner Advances to its Seventh Consecutive MAAC Water Polo Championship Game

POUGHKEEPSIE, NY – No. 1 seeded Wagner College has defeated No. 4 Iona College, 13-5, in the first semifinal game of the 2017 MAAC Water Polo Championship. Wagner has advanced to its seventh consecutive championship final and plays for its fourth consecutive MAAC Water Polo Championship,

The Seahawks are slated to take on the winner of today's second semifinal contest between No. 2 Marist College and No. 3 Virginia Military Institute. The 2017 MAAC Water Polo Championship game takes place tomorrow, Sunday, April 30 at 2:00 p.m.

Iona's Rebecca Koshy opened the scoring 37 seconds into the game. Wagner responded with goals from Kimberly Watson and Elise Begg. Iona would tie it at the end of the first quarter with another strike from Koshy.

Iona's Megan Hofer and Wagner's Watson traded goals midway in the second. Elise Begg scored back-to-back goals at the end of the first half to give the Seahawks a 5-3 lead over the Gaels.

Wagner outscored the Gaels 8-2 in the second half. The Seahawks saw goals from Watson, Erica Hardy, Jacqui Sjogren, and Millie Pullyblank. Watson led all scorers with seven points (six goals, one assist) and Elise Begg tallied her fourth hat trick of the season. Goalie Emily Riddle made three saves on 13 shots.

Rebecca Koshy and Megan Hofer each scored two goals apiece for the Gaels. Kayla Allen also found the back of the net with 5:28 to play in the third quarter.
