No. 1 Fairfield University defeated No. 4 Iona College, 12-1, in the third game of the 2017 MAAC LifeStorage Baseball Championship. The 2017 MAAC Regular Season Champions, Fairfield advances in the winners' bracket and plays the winner of No. 2 Marist College and No. 3 Canisius College on Friday, May 26 at 12:00 p.m. on MAAC.TV.

Stags' sophomore starter John Signore (7-2) earned the win. He tossed 7.2 innings, allowed one run, earned, on three hits. He struck out nine and walked none. Signore pitched 6.1 hitless innings until he surrendered his first hit of the game to senior first baseman Matt Byrne. He retired the first 10 batters he faced prior to an error in the top of the fourth inning.

Sophomore third baseman Jack Gethings went 2-4 at the plate with two RBI and a run scored for the Stags. Gethings drove in two runs in the bottom of the sixth inning with a single down the leftfield line. Junior catcher Kevin Radziewicz went 1-4 with a double, two RBI, and a run scored. Radziewicz drove in two runs with a double to left-centerfield in the bottom of the sixth inning.

As a team the Stags hit .429 (6-14) with two outs, .368 (7-19) with runners on base, .308 (4-13) with runners in scoring position, and .375 (3-8) when leading off an inning. Fairfield drove in six runs with two outs.

Seven pitchers appeared in tonight's contest for Iona. Junior pitcher Patrick Ryan (5-3) got the start for the Gaels and took the loss. He pitched 1.1 innings, allowed three runs, one earned, on one hit. He struck out none and walked five. Six Iona relievers combined for 6.2 innings of work, allowed nine runs, eight earned, on eight hits. They struck out three and walked four.

Junior shortstop Sean Scales drove in the Gaels' lone run with a single in the top of the eighth inning. Scales was 1-3 on the evening with the RBI single.

Iona plays its third game of the 2017 MAAC LifeStorage Championship on Thursday, May 25 at 7:00 p.m. The Gaels are slated to face the winner of No. 5 Manhattan College and No. 6 Rider University.

The 2017 MAAC LifeStorage Baseball Championship takes place at Sal Maglie Stadium hosted by Canisius College and Niagara University from May 24-28.

The Championship is a double elimination style tournament. If the team coming out of the losers' bracket defeats the team in the winners' bracket, the if necessary game takes place on Saturday, May 27 at 3:30 p.m.

The winner of the 2017 MAAC Baseball Championship earns the league's automatic bid into the NCAA Championship. The NCAA Baseball Selection Show is on Monday, May 29 on ESPNU at 12:00 p.m.
