RIDER UNIVERSITY WINS 2016 MAAC MEN’S SOCCER CHAMPIONSHIP

HAMDEN, CT – Rider University has defeated Quinnipiac University, 3-1 to win the 2016 MAAC Men’s Soccer Championship. The victory marks Rider’s fourth MAAC Men’s Soccer Championship in program history and their second consecutive title.

Rider got on the board first in the 42nd minute of play. Junior forward Elliott Otmani found the back of the net off a feed from senior midfielder Christian Flath. Flath started the scoring chance by stealing the ball in Quinnipiac’s zone and found Otmani trailing the play.

Quinnipiac tied the game, 1-1 in the 51st minute on a goal by freshman back Conor McCoy. Senior midfielder James Doig drove a cross into the box and McCoy was able to tally the goal with a header.  

In the 62nd minute freshman forward Clement Bourret gave the Broncs a 2-1 lead. Bourret corralled the ball in Quinnipiac’s zone and took a shot from just outside the box for Rider’s second score of the game.

Senior forward Jose Aguinaga scored the Broncs’ third and final goal in the 85th minute, he was assisted by Flath.

The 2016 MAAC Co-Goalkeeper of the Year, Ryan Baird made two saves on the afternoon and was named 2016 Tournament MVP.

Rider University will receive the leagues automatic bid to the 2016 NCAA Men’s Soccer Championship. The NCAA Selection Show for Division I Men’s Soccer will air on NCAA.com on Monday, November 14 at 1:00 p.m.
