MAAC Men's Soccer All-MAAC Teams and Major Awards Announced
EDISON, NJ - The Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference announced the 2018 Men’s Soccer All-MAAC Teams and Major Award Winners as voted on by the league’s head coaches Tuesday.
Eamon Whelan of Quinnipiac University was the unanimous choice for Offensive Player of the Year. The junior forward led the MAAC in points (27), points per game (1.69), goals (12), and goals per game (0.75) during the regular season. Whelan is the first Bobcat to claim Offensive Player of the Year honors. The Connecticut native scored in 7-of-10 league games this season and totaled eight goals in league play, which also led the MAAC. Whelan was also named All-MAAC First Team and was a two-time Offensive Player of the Week.
Fairfield University’s Jonas Vergin was named the Defensive Player of the Year. Vergin becomes the first Stag to win the award since Michael O'Keeffe in 2011. Vergin is the third Stag to win the award since 2003 when the award started. Vergin and the Stags’ defense allowed 17 goals all season, which tied them for second in the league. Fairfield also recorded five clean sheets in 2018. The native of Germany was named All-MAAC First Team as well.
Vergin’s teammate, Gordon Botterill, picked up Goalkeeper of the Year honors. Botterill, who was named to the All-MAAC First Team, posted an 11-4-2 record in goal with four shutouts. The sophomore posted 0.97 goals against average, and a .770 save percentage. Botterill was fifth in the MAAC in goals against average; with being one of three goalies to log over 1500 minutes in goal. Botterill picked-up Defensive Player of the Week honors on November 5.
The Rookie of the Year went to Iona College’s Mauro Bravo. Bravo is the sixth Gael to collect the honor, which is tied for the most in league history with Saint Peter’s University. The native of Madrid, Spain tallied four goals and three assists for 11 points. The 11 points were second on the Gaels. Bravo was named Rookie of the Week back on September 24. Bravo was voted All-MAAC Second Team as well.
Fairfield’s Carl Rees was named the 2018 BSN Sports MAAC Coach of the Year. For Rees it is the second-straight year that the Stags’ head coach takes home the award and it is the third time that Rees has been named coach of the year. Rees guided the Stags to the Men’s Soccer Regular Season Title for the second-straight season with an 8-0-2 MAAC record. Fairfield also knocked-off then-ninth-ranked UNCW 3-2 back on September 7. The Stags have not lost since September 22.
